Honduras Program

Facts: The country of Honduras is still recovering from the devastation and widespread loss brought by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. Mitch obliterated about 70% of the crops and an estimated 70–80% of the transportation infrastructure, including nearly all bridges and secondary roads. Across the country, 33,000 houses were destroyed, an additional 50,000 were damaged, some 5,000 people killed, and 12,000 injured. In 2008 severe flooding damaged or destroyed half the country’s roads. Currently Honduras is suffering from droughts.

According to the World Bank, Honduras is the third poorest country in the western hemisphere. Over 59% of Hondurans remain below the poverty line and 36.2% below the extreme poverty line.

Project Barrio Lempira - Olancho, Honduras

Status: Assessment complete

Phase: Project Design

Barrio Lempira is a small community of 28 homes with 168 residents that is helping itself by raising funds through taxes to provide a new water system.

EWB-USA OC recently completed a successful project with the non-governmental organization (NGO) Olancho Aid to enhance a communication system for three schools in a nearby community.  Olancho Aid identify a community that could use EWB-USA OC’s engineering services to move forward with a water supply project and is looking forward to our continued partnership to help the local communities. As part of the Olancho Aid project, EWB-USA OC was able to create strong ties to the community. They are willing to provide housing and transportation.

The Need
